Life Gets in the Way

I know I broke the cardinal rule of social media, I didn’t blog or post on a schedule. Every day we are faced with choices, and our priorities take over. It is very important for me to make my priorities very clear. I love what I do for work, and I love the people who I connect with online, but this is not my top priority. I do sometimes let work take over my life, but when my life needs me I don’t hesitate to move these things to the side.

I think so many of us get overwhelmed because of all the things we think we “need” to do or let others expectations take over our schedule. This is how stress can creep into our lives and diminish our joy and happiness. I’ve suffered from depression for most of my adult life and I am too aware of what happens to me if I get stressed out and overwhelmed so it is important for me not to allow it to go to far.

I am very good at recognizing when things are getting too much for me. My mood is the first to show it, quickly followed by my cravings and food choices. My work space is another good indicator, the messier my space is the more cluttered my thoughts. I also find that although I spend a lot of time trying to get things done, very little is accomplished. When this starts to happen I know I need to take action.

The way I deal with this is I start to make lists of what I think I need to do, all the things I’ve committed to, all the classes, appointments, meetings and projects I have scheduled. Then I figure out what must get done now and what can be put off to a later date or passed on to someone else. I also then make sure that I have time for family, fun and rest.

This spring my son needed me to be available for him, he is grown and he should have been able to take care of many of these things on his own, but he is in a state of transition and his actions were telling me I needed to be available. This killed my big plans for much of the spring, but I got done what needed to get done and everything else just needed to wait. I am very happy that I was able to deal with the stress of him not meeting my expectations without getting irritated at him.

What are your priorities and within them which are your responsibility? I write mine down and remind myself of them often. I like to live by example, which means I’m not perfect, I don’t live a charmed life, I have issues, I have challenges and I put myself first when I need to.
